Sacramento County deputies are working a gunfire incident that unfolded Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento while authorities were breaking up a large unauthorized gathering of hundreds of attendees.
Prior to the Shooting
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first dispatched to the park at approximately 6:30 Saturday evening after receiving reports of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Following that, a follow-up call was made mentioning a potential altercation occurring at Howe Park.
Air support conducted an aerial sweep but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Nevertheless, deputies found that hundreds of people had congregated at Howe Park without permission.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies set about removing people from the park by forming a perimeter and making announcements commanding the hundreds present to vacate the area. Nearly 15 minutes were given for attendees to disperse.
As the crowd was being cleared that Sacramento park shooting 2026 20 to 25 gunshots were fired. The sudden gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Law enforcement immediately began identifying shooting victims.
Four Victims Hospitalized
By the time the scene was secured, four victims were discovered with shooting injuries. The shooting victims — consisting of one woman and three men all believed to be in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Doctors and nurses reported that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one victim's wounds were minor. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped triage the four victims at the park.
Crime Scene Evidence
The center of the incident appears to have occurred adjacent to the Cottage Way corridor close to the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Detectives found more spent casings scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were observed in the wrought iron perimeter fencing adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence showed that a shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot building and parking lot. The Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. CSI investigators and detectives continued working through the early morning hours.
Arrests Made
Information obtained through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a Kia vehicle was pulled over in Solano County California. Four detainees were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to pick up those detained for further questioning. Video that was reviewed revealed that there were two gunmen.
